Top 10 things to do in Iceland for families

Iceland can be tricky to plan and is one of those destinations where you need ensure that you use a travel advisor with experience, knowledge, and good local contacts to create an unforgettable experience. 

Most interestingly this is a destination that you can really enjoy in as little as 3 days; a week trip will cover a lot but 10 to 12 days will cover a great deal of geography and offer unforgettable sites and is an optimal time to spend here. 

So where are you going, Reykjavik, West Iceland, Westfjords, North Iceland, East Iceland or South Iceland?  No matter what you decide, here are some experiences you can enjoy.

  1. Visit the capital of Reykjavik – spend a night or two in the capital, enjoy the locals, the food, museums and the wonderful buzz it offers.
  2. Drive the Ring Road – Route 1 takes you around the entire country, you can do it in 12 days but it can also be done in 7 if needed.  Full disclosure…. be prepared for a lot of driving!
  3. Drive the Golden Circle – the golden circle take between 4-5 hours to complete, you can enjoy the incredible sites it has to offer in both summer and winter.
  4. Enjoy the Snæfellsnes Peninsula – only two hours from the capital it is known as ‘little Iceland’ because of the variety of beauty. If you love the Game of Thrones, this is a destination for you.
  5. It’s a Waterfall frenzy– more than 1000 waterfalls in Iceland that offer something different. Do you want to see the highest one, the most powerful, the most popular, one that you can stand behind or one that comes from two glaciers? Take your pick!
  6. Go whale watching – there are an abundance of whales in Iceland, enjoy a planned tour and try and spot these mammals in the wild.
  7. See the Puffins if you can – you can see the puffins from April to September each year.

  8. Have you seen the black beaches? – you can see these on the south coast of Iceland, the sand originated for the basalt lava, beaches to visit include Reynisfjara, Solheimasandur, Stokksness, Diamond beach and Dyrholaey.
  9. What about the Northern lights? – these are a bucket list item and no visit to Iceland would be complete without looking for or seeing the Northern Lights.  Visiting between October and Match will increase your odds.
  10. Iceland’s famous National ParkThingvellir can be found in the southwest of Iceland this is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.
