I believe that packing depends on who you are travelling with, I remember travelling when we first got married, we could take a carryon for a 7-10 day vacation, when the children came along things changed dramatically and there was a lot more luggage, more than needed but there was always the ‘just in case’ question. My teenagers are now 17 and 15 and as much as I try and guide them when packing we always seem to pack too much. Choosing the size of your luggage, planning daily outfits and doubling up seems to really make a difference.
Some tips when packing:
Always start with a packing list. With the stress of a vacation it is so easy to forget to pack items that you need, if you have a list there are no surprises when you realise you have forgotten an essential item.
Invest in good durable luggage. The best decision and investment we ever made. About 10 years ago for the first time we invested in durable luggage that would last us a lifetime, we have been using them ever since and they are still good as new.
Know the airlines luggage policy. This is crucial and will take alot of the stress away when arriving at the airport, it is awful to start your vacation with having to pay for overweight luggage.
Maximise your luggage space. Make use of packing cubes or compression bags, it helps to stay organised and reduces the amount of space you use and I know not everyone will like this or agree but rolling your clothing is a gamechanger.
Prioritising your packing. Ensure that you pack all your essentials in your carry-on bag and pack one outfit to change into, not only will this help you on a long haul flight but will be a lifesaver if your luggage goes missing.
Always leave a little extra space. It is good to leave some space in your luggage for new purchases or gifts.
Your liquids. I would invest in clear plastic travel toiletry bags, one for your carryon and one for the balance of your liquids. Putting your essential liquids in a clear plastic ziplock bag means that when you arrive at the airport you do not have the additional stress of finding your liquids and transferring them into a plastic bag.
Bigger and heavier items of clothing. I would recommend that you wear your bigger, bulkier items like coats and boots on the plane allowing your more space in your luggage.
Layer up. If you are travelling to cooler environments or between seasons learn how to layer your clothing instead of packing bulkier items.
Keeping your luggage safe. Don’t forget to clearly label your luggage and put some clear identifiers on your luggage so that they are distinct and we always recommend that you take out travel insurance should your luggage go missing.
